Basic tips and hints for choosing grades of white surface grinding wheels:
Softer grades (H and I) are recommended for hard materials, rapid stock removal, and larger contact areas.
Harder grades ( J,K & L) are recommended for soft materials, longer wheel life, small contact areas.
To make a wheel behave harder, decrease infeed rate, traverse speed, work speed, or through-feed rate.
To make a wheel behave softer, increase infeed rate, traverse speed, work speed, or through-feed rate
> Straight Cup Grinding Wheels (Type 6)

Type 6 Straight-Cup Wheel:

An abrasive wheel that is shaped like a straight-sided cup or bowl with a mounting hole in the bottom of the cup. Sometimes called a “cup wheel.” It has diameter (D), thickness (T), hole size (H), rim thickness (W), and back thickness (E) dimensions. Grinding is normally done on the cup rim (W dimension).

> Flaring Cup Grinding Wheels (Type 11)

Type 11 Flaring-Cup Wheel:

An abrasive wheel that is shaped like a cup or bowl with a mounting hole in the bottom of the cup. The sides of the cup are not straight-sided but are angled outward. Sometimes called a “flaring cup wheel” since the sides are “flared” out. It has double diameter dimensions (top D and bottom J). It also has thickness (T), hole size (H), rim thickness (W) and back thickness (E) dimensions. Grinding is normally done on the cup rim (W dimension).

> Dish Grinding Wheels (Type 12)

Type 12 Dish Wheel:

Side Grinding wheel known as a dish, differing from a Type 11 in the type 12 always has a "N" dimension. The "W" dimension of the Type 11 becomes the "D" dimension of a Type 12. The grinding may be performed by the "N" face.

Peripheral grinding wheel known as a saucer, differing from a Type 12 iin that the cross-section is equal through out. The face is always half round.
